So, I turn on the first episode and after the first episode I turned to my boyfriend and said, "I really hope Fox doesn't fuck this up. This easily has to be the best show on television right now" (this does NOT include in my own little world channels I don't get like HBO and Showtime). Believe you me, I know how amazing "Weeds" is.
I thought it would be way too white, like many of the other Fox and CW. No offense, but 80% of all shows popular now dedicate to the 15-24 year-old girl demographic. Like I said, I was skeptical. Now, I am one of their biggest advocates.
Each character is built so amazingly and the show never forgets a single one of them. "Glee" does focus more on some characters than others, but it lets EVERYONE shine in some way. Letting the True Colors shining through. "Glee" is a lesson in humanity and comraderie.
From the moment I meant the character Will Schuester, it's like I cared about this guy like he was my best friend. I saw the writing on th
e wall with his marriage and love life. He's a genuinely nice guy that deserves all the happiness in the world. I think he's soon to find it. Then when I heard Matthew (Will) sing "Golddigger", I honestly felt this show was more than just about a stoic group of singers.Of course Jane Lynch brings a comedic genius that adds a large course of dark humor to the otherwise hopeful and optimistic outlook of the glee members. Everytime morale goes up, she finds a way to burst bubble after bubble. That never, ever gets boring.
Although I was never in Glee Club, I understand what it's like to feel like a high school outcast and trying to find an outlet. Luckily for them, they found theirs. I never find mine. I sometimes sit there and wish that I realized a long time ago how much I loved singing and the stage. Each episode, we see the characters deal with some VERY serious issues - coming out, teenage pregnancy, etc...yet the one thing that keeps them going is not only their passion for glee, but their love and support for each other.
With the eclectic mix of routines the cast has done, it has me on the very edge of my seat what song they will do for sectionals. The actors themselves are very humble people and never forgot that. I've seen the cast of Twilight acting pompous after indicating that they didn't expect how popular it would be. The "Glee" cast has been in numerous talk shows but has treated everyone with respect and humility.
I find that the show has so many layers of social commentary for those who pay attention to multiple messages in the show. However, I find that for those possibly not able to really get how these people are impacting a TV show about performers that's not a reality show, the show-stopping musical numbers are enough to keep you coming back for more.
Bravo Fox for realizing this gem. Please don't screw this one up like you keep doing for Joss Whedon.
